A client sits quietly with one hand resting on the arm of a chair. The hypnotherapist suggests that the hand may begin to feel lighter as though a thread were gently lifting it from the wrist. At first, nothing obvious happens. Then one finger moves, the wrist loosens, and the hand begins to rise. The client watches with surprise. “I know it is my hand,” she says, “but it does not feel as though I am deliberately lifting it.”
